“Blessed is the man who trusts in
the LORD whose hope is the LORD. He is
like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the
stream…” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
We place our trust and hopes on
such trivial things. We want and desire
things that our beyond our control. The beauty
of today’s first reading is that it reminds us that we are only truly blessed
if we place our complete trust in the Lord.
When we do, Jeremiah compares us to a tree planted by the water that has
long and deep roots: it is very
difficult to tear it down. Those who
trust in God will not be deterred by the things they cannot control because
their faith is not placed in the things of this world rather it is firmly
rooted in Christ. We must abandon our
will to the Lord this Lent so it may more perfectly conform to his own.
