A brother priest said an interesting thing to me when I
went to confession the other day: “Let
yourself have fun.” We get so focused and
wrapped up in the tasks we do every day that we forget that there is joy in
life that must be embraced and celebrated.
It reminds me of a line from Mary Poppins when she said, “In every job
that must be done there is an element of fun.”
And Lent isn’t supposed to be a time to table “fun” for 40 days. While penitential and reflective in
character, it is supposed to be a joyful season in which we prepare for Easter
as one of the prefaces of the Mass reminds us.
Anyways, I took the priest’s advice, went to a hockey game that night with
some parishioners, sat with their kids did, and watched the game with a childlike
joy and had as much fun as those kids.
So today’s lesson: as you journey
towards Easter, don’t forget to let yourself have some fun!
